Bernal Middle School
7th Grade English Language Arts Syllabus Course Description: In seventh grade ELA, students will engage in activities that build on their abilities and understanding in order to strengthen their reading, writing, and oral language skills. In our class, students are expected to: -Read a wide variety of literary and informational texts. -Write literary pieces in several genres. -Actively discuss and debate during cooperative learning groups. Supplies:
Assignments and Grading Policies: 60%- Summative Assessment (Tests, Projects, Performance Tasks, etc.) 40%- Formative Assessment (Assignments, Homework, Response Cards, Quizzes, etc.) Homework will primarily consist of completing classroom assignments. In addition, students need to actively reading at least 20 min each day outside of the classroom environment and are invited to journal daily. Tutoring: Our students’ success is paramount. Monday 3:40-4:30 or we can arrange a different time if needed. Computer Access & Technology: A great proportion of student tasks are technology driven. Though some students do not have a tech device, our campus provides a vast array of computer access. The Library is open every morning, lunch, and afternoon, and has about 25 computers and multiple iPads available. The ELA department and the campus community Ipad and Chromebook carts are available almost daily for students to use, when requested. In addition, a computer lab is open every morning from 7:45-8:20. With the use of technology comes responsibility. My expectations are clear. Bernal is a BYOD campus: Bring Your Own Device; therefore, unless the parent/guardian has different expectations, I would like the student’s device to be in class each day. When appropriate, iPads and Chromebooks will be provided for all students. *TECH Procedure: Red Signal = Devices out of sight and turned off Yellow Signal = Devices desktop ready, face down, and on silent Green Signal = Devices are ready to go, in use, and ON TASK *Violation of procedure: 1st- Redirect to be on task. 2nd- Loses tech privilege for the day and given an alternate route to complete the activity (device is put away). If you have questions or concerns, please contact me. Google Classroom: My classes will be using Google Classroom this year. Each student will be added to Google Classroom for their particular class section. 7th Grade Collaborative Team: Lauren Stolte (Department Coordinator) Monica Arreguin [email protected] [email protected] Ext. 3243 Ext. 3203 Robert Davis Brian Cheatham [email protected] brian.cheatham@nisd.net Ext. 3247 Ext. 3245
